Emily (Burroughs) Cowan (she/her) is a Research Associate in the Division of Infectious Disease and ,Global Public Health at the University of California San Diego, currently serving as a Research Associate for the Women SHINE project with Dr. Stockman. A San Diego native, she graduated from the Honors Program at St. Joseph’s University New York (Brooklyn) with a B.S. in Biology and minors in Chemistry and Psychology.
Emily has a deep-rooted commitment to blending scientific curiosity and community betterment, as is evident through her previous research into the effects of prenatal stressors on anxiety and depression in Drosophila melanogaster and as a volunteer with The Trevor Project, an LGBTQ+ youth crisis hotline. She hopes to use her experiences in crisis counseling and research to contribute to the missions of Women SHINE and iSTRIVE.
Outside of the lab, Emily enjoys trying out new coffee shops in San Diego, collecting vinyl records, watching baseball, and helping coach a local high school softball team. Ultimately, she hopes to pursue a career as a genetic counselor, specializing in prenatal, pediatric, or psychiatric genetic counseling.
